On a warm April day in 1987 five high school friends joined together in a small house on Virginia Avenue in Charlottesville, VA to draft the original five teams in what would later be called the Smith Mountain Lake Baseball Association. The SMLBA is one of the oldest rotissiere leagues in the world. The league is an AL only, auction league, with nine teams. The team owners, all of whom grew up in Charlottesville, for many years spent the last week of each summer camping and boating at Smith Mountain Lake, hence the league name.
